Last February 16 to 19, 2021, PHIVOLCS conducted the Module 1 (Basic REDAS and Seismic Hazard Assessment Module) of the online training series entitled “Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction into the Local Development Planning Process, Contingency Planning, and Emergency Preparedness through the Use of REDAS Software for the Province of Quezon”. The training module focused on the basic REDAS features and Seismic Assessment Hazard. Headed by DOST Undersecretary and PHIVOLCS officer-in-charge Dr. Renato U. Solidum, Jr., REDAS Programme coordinator and Associate Scientist Dr. Maria Leonila P. Bautista, and REDAS Course advisers Dr. Bartolome C. Bautista, Ishmael C. Narag, and Engr. Angelito G. Lanuza, the training included the following speakers and facilitators: Dr. Rhommel N. Grutas, Lizeth Kate B. Nicdao, Jan Robey DC. Salazar, Ian P. Javier, John Deladia, Jordana Marie L. Argamosa, Engr. Nikka Marie B. Sales, Engr. Noel C. Rosario, Jr., and Engr. Maria Teresa G. Llera. Resource speakers from DOST-PAGASA, Sharon Juliet M. Arruejo and Bernard C. Punzalan II, were invited to give a lecture on hydrometeorological hazards and the new REDAS module, the Satellite Rainfall Monitor (SRM). A guest facilitator, Jesus Ferdinand G. Mata of Lucena City DRRMO, and guest speaker, Dr. Melchor Avenilla, Jr., head of Quezon DRRMO also joined the training.

The pre-training orientation on February 16 was conducted to verify if the REDAS Software, ETAM, SRM, SQLite, and QGIS were properly installed. The following days were focused on combination of lectures and hands on exercises to familiarize themselves on the Basic Features of REDAS, Map Reading, Earthquake and Earthquake Hazards, Philippines Seismicity and Earthquake Catalog, Hydrometeorological Hazards, Introduction and Usage of the Satellite Rainfall Monitoring Tool, Digitizing and Annotating in REDAS, and Introduction and Usage of the Earthquake and Tsunami Alerting Tool (ETAM). The Seismic Hazard Assessment was also given special attention and participants were required a hands-on exercise on this topic. An overview on impact assessment with a sample calculation of an Earthquake Impact Assessment using PSA Data was presented to demonstrate one of the main capabilities of the REDAS software.  The training was capped with participants asked to list their action plans after the training.

A total of 26 participants completed the training module: 4 from the Provincial Government of Quezon, 2 from the City of Lucena, 10 from the municipality of Mauban, 9 from Atimonan and 1 guest participant from the City of Iligan. Participants were provided with REDAS version 2.9M, ETAM version 2.5.7, and SRM version 1.0.2. A total of 24 REDAS, 23 ETAM, and 25 SRM license keys were issued.

The training concluded successfully with positive impressions from the participants. The potential usage of the REDAS software in the crafting DRRM plans and Comprehensive Land Use Plans in supporting the plans and projects of the province of Quezon was identified in the workshop action planning activity.
