PHIVOLCS conducted the online training entitled “Capacity Enhancement of the National Irrigation Administration on Hazard, Impact Assessment and Database Development through the Use of the REDAS Software” – Module 2 (Developing Relational Database in REDAS) for the National Irrigation Administration last March 15-18, 2022. The main objective of this module was to train the participants on the use of SQLite as relational and spatial database system in REDAS.
All of the 31 participants from the REDAS Module 1 Training which was held two weeks prior to this event proceeded to the REDAS Module 2 Training. The photo below shows the participants and speakers during the training.
A one-day pre-training orientation was conducted on March 15 for the verification of the REDAS, SQLite and Quantum GIS to make sure that all software are still working properly.
During the training proper, a series of lectures and hands-on activities were discussed which include “Familiarization on SQLite Module”, “Developing SQLite Database”, “Putting Spatial Component to SQLite and Digitization”, “Plotting Data in REDAS from SQLite Tables (Base Maps and Administrative Boundaries)”, “Plotting Multi-Hazard Maps”, “Advanced SQLite Scripting” and “Linking and Plotting of REDAS SQLite Database to QGIS and Google Earth”.
Additional lectures “Understanding Geologic Hazards (Rain-Induced Landslide and Flood)” by Mr. Julius Vincent Umali (from MGB) and “Volcanoes and Volcanic Hazards” by Ms. Ma. Antonia V. Bornas (from VMEPD-PHIVOLCS) were also discussed on the training to inform the participants about these natural threats.
The participants were required to develop a relational database using SQLITE and QGIS and pot these in REDAS. The seatwork was for them to digitize farm lots and producing a crop yield map. Outputs were presented, discussed, and graded during the last day of the training. The photos below show sample outputs of the seatwork digitized in QGIS and plotted in REDAS by two of the participants that received the highest ratings.
Based on the evaluation form responses, most of the participants liked digitizing in QGIS and plotting different kinds of maps in REDAS. One of the responses to the question what they learned on the training was: “I picked up more concepts about volcanic hazards and historical events leading to the increased awareness of volcanic hazards. I also have a clearer understanding on the parameters used in coming up with the multi-hazard maps.”
The training was headed by DOST Undersecretary and PHIVOLCS Officer-in-Charge Dr. Renato U. Solidum, Jr., REDAS Program Coordinator and Associate Scientist Dr. Maria Leonila P. Bautista, and REDAS Course Advisers Dr. Bartolome C. Bautista, Ishmael C. Narag, and Engr. Angelito G. Lanuza. The speakers and facilitators were Ma. Antonia V. Bornas, Florenette B. Garcia, Ian P. Javier, John Deladia, For. Jordana Marie L. Argamosa, Engr. Noel C. Rosario Jr., Sarena P. Tarongoy, Engr. Hannah Joy D. Torio, and Engr. Jose Vincent E. Cruz. Mr. Julius Vincent P. Umali from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) was also invited as guest speaker for the training.
