PHIVOLCS-DOST conducted a REDAS training entitled “Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction into the Local Development Planning Process, Contingency Planning, And Emergency Preparedness Through the Use of REDAS Software for Negros Occidental – Modules 1-3.  The topics covered Basic REDAS, Seismic Hazard Assessment Module, Developing Relational Database in REDAS and REDAS Exposure Database Development”.  The online part was held last August 30-31 while the face-to-face training was held at the Nature’s Village Resort, Talisay City, Negros Occidental. The Opening Remarks was given by the Provincial Disaster Management Program Division (PDMPD) head Irene Bel R. Ploteña, while the Closing Message from PHIVOLCS Director Teresito C. Bacolcol (Photo 1). 


The training was headed by PHIVOLCS Director Dr. Teresito C. Bacolcol, REDAS Program Coordinator and Associate Scientist Dr. Maria Leonila P. Bautista, and REDAS Course Advisers Dr. Bartolome C. Bautista, Ishmael C. Narag, and Engr. Angelito G. Lanuza.  The speakers and facilitators were Ma. Antonia V. Bornas, Dr. Winchelle Ian G. Sevilla, Engr. Dave Andrei Rivera, Perly E. Guevara, Mari-Andylene Quintia, For. Jordana Marie L. Argamosa, Conrado Alfonso M. Favis, Ian P. Javier, John Deladia, Sarena P. Tarongoy, Engr. Hannah Joy D. Torio, Engr. Jose Vincent E. Cruz, Princess Di E. Pascual, Jan Van Oliver Q. Samorano, Lemuel Austin P. Constantino, and Gabriel Angelo Rondin.  Resource speakers included Julius Vincent P. Umali from DENR-MGB, Bernard Punzalan II, and Sharon Juliet Arruejo from PAGASA-DOST

A total of 148 Basic REDAS, ETAM, SRM License Keys and REDAS EDM GeoMapperPH credentials were issued for the training.  There were 37 participants consisting of representatives from Negros Occidental PDMPD and LGUs (Calatrava, Candoni, City of Talisay, Don Salvador Benedicto, Enrique B. Magalona, Escalante City, Isabela, Kabankalan City, La Carlota City, La Castellana, Manapla, Murcia, San Carlos City, San Enrique, Victorias, Bago City, Binalbagan, Cadiz City, City of Himamaylan, Pontevedra, Sagay City and Hinigaran). Two PHIVOLCS personnel of the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory also joined as participants of the training. A building survey exercise in Barangay Zone 15 (Photo 2) was conducted for the participants to

experience first-hand exposure database collection. The newly developed EDM 3.0 (Photo 3) or the hybrid method of exposure database development was also introduced. This is a newly-developed module of REDAS for areas with poor internet connection.


Among the hands on activities (Photo 4) is the generation of a ground shaking simulation map and in particular the earthquake selected was the 2012 Magnitude 6.9 Negros Oriental earthquake.  Photo 5 shows a sample output by one the training participants.

The graduation ceremony was highlighted with impressions from the training concluded successfully with positive impressions from the participants.
