PHIVOLCS conducted a six-day training entitled “Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction into the Local Development Planning Process, Contingency Planning and Emergency Preparedness through the Provision and Use of the REDAS Software" last September 4 - 9, 2017 for Davao City. The training was held at Grand Regal Hotel, Davao City. The goal of the training was to provide and familiarize the participants with the capability of the REDAS Software, especially the modules which are designed to be used for risk assessment.

There was a total of 35 participants during the training; CDRRMO (6), Public Safety (2), CENRO (2), CVO (2), CHO (2), CSSDO (2), Agri Office (1), CBO (2), Accounting (2), CPDO (2), CEO (1), Mindanao Development Authority (1), DILG XI (2), DepEd (2), DOST XI (2), and University of Southeastern Philippines (2). The participants were provided with REDAS version 2.9d. A total of 33 REDAS software license keys was issued during the said event.

The first day of the training covered the introduction and installation of the REDAS Software, basic features of REDAS, and lecture on basic map reading. The succeeding days of the training covered lectures ranging from Earthquake and Volcanic Hazards, Building Risk Database, Earthquake Risk Assessment, the use of SQLite as a Relational and Spatial Database System, and Seismic Hazard Assessment. The two new REDAS impact modules Severe Wind Impact Forecasting Tool (SWIFT) and Flood Loss Assessment Tool (FLOAT) were also taught in the training. In addition, software such as Exposure Database Module (EDM), SQLite and Quantum GIS, and the EDM and MyTracks in Android devices were also taught during the training. The participants were taught how to use the EDM in Android Devices for conducting building survey. Different earthquake risk assessment methodologies and computations were also taught in the training, as well as identifying building earthquake damage levels for conducting earthquake risk assessment.

The participants showed enthusiasm during the duration of the training. According to them, the tool will be able to help them determine the possible impacts from given earthquake scenarios. The convenience of the EDM for Android Devices was also a big help for them to prepare and plan accordingly by developing their own building exposure database.

Speakers and facilitators during the training were Bartolome C. Bautista, Maria Leonila P. Bautista, Ishmael C. Narag, Angelito G. Lanuza, Jayvie H. Nadua, Dave Andrei V. Rivera, Johnlery P. Deximo, Emmanuel D. Mitiam, Mary Ann T. Montion, Roschele G. Ablan, Lawrence Aaron C. Bañes, Clint Drexel M. Ongue, Joana C. Umbaña, and Chayserie A.
