On November 21, 2024, marked the launch of the Seismic Hazard Atlas for the Design Earthquake of the Philippines at the PHIVOLCS Auditorium. DOST-PHIVOLCS Director Teresito C. Bacolcol welcomed the attendees and DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum, Jr. gave his message that by integrating these insights into our planning and construction practices, we are taking essential steps toward safeguarding lives and property against the inevitable challenges posed by earthquakes. It emphasizes the importance of resilience and preparedness in the face of natural hazards. Their inspiring words set the tone for the event, underscoring the value of tools like this in strengthening disaster readiness.
As the program unfolded, Dr. Rhommel N. Grutas, DOST-PHIVOLCS Supervising Science Research Specialist and SHADE Project Leader introduced the Seismic Hazard Atlas, highlighting its significance as a comprehensive resource that provides critical insights into seismic risks across the Philippines. This innovative tool aims to guide engineers, planners and local government in designing structures and implementing measures that enhance safety and reduce vulnerabilities. The unveiling of the Atlas is a pivotal step toward a safer, more resilient nation.
Dr. Lessandro Estelito G. Garciano, President of the Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines (ASEP), shared his gratitude and optimism for the continued collaboration between PHIVOLCS and ASEP. He emphasized how this partnership fosters advancements in engineering and disaster mitigation, benefiting communities nationwide.
Closing the event, Science Research Analyst Miguel Florido Abitang, representing Mr. Ishmael C. Narag, OIC ,Seismological Observation and Earthquake Prediction Division, DOST-PHIVOLCS, expressed appreciation for the collective efforts that made the project possible. He extended heartfelt gratitude to DOST-PCIEERD for funding the project, highlighting their invaluable support in turning this vision into reality.
