The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology will hold the “Training on Communicating PHIVOLCS Information Tools for Elementary Teachers" on July 3 and 4, 2019 at the Conference Hall, Department of Education Schools Division Office (DepEd SDO) of Abra in Bangued.
Two (2) batches, each composed of 40 elementary school teachers from the Province of Abra, will be briefed on using available PHIVOLCS information materials and tools in teaching volcano, earthquake, and tsunami hazards to school children. Age-appropriate materials such as flashcards and videos will be highlighted in the training. Practical exercises that can help students appreciate and understand geologic hazards will also be introduced.
DOST-PHIVOLCS, in partnership with the DepEd SDO of Abra, seeks to assist teachers in capacitating students towards geologic disaster awareness and preparedness. School children are highly vulnerable to disasters, but they are never too young to be disaster-ready. It is best to educate them using easy-to-understand materials and tools, such as those developed and made available by DOST-PHIVOLCS.
