The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) prompts everyone to do the Duck, Cover, and Hold in participation to the 3rd Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) that will be held on August 08, 2019. The ceremonial pressing of the button to signal the start of the NSED will take place at 2:00 PM in Ormoc City, Leyte Province where a magnitude 6.5 earthquake occurred in 2017.

Ormoc City will simulate an earthquake scenario of intensity VIII based on the threat of a Magnitude 7.2 event from the Leyte Segment of the Philippine Fault Zone.

As the agency mandated to monitor and study earthquakes, DOST-PHIVOLCS provides hazard and risk information to help in formulation and implementation of disaster risk reduction-related plans. The agency also pushes for the continued promotion of simulation exercises since it introduced the conduct of earthquake drills in schools way back 2002.
