PHIVOLCS conducted the online training entitled “Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction into the Local Development Planning Process, Emergency Preparedness, and Contingency Planning through the Use of the REDAS Software” – Module 2 (Developing Relational Database in REDAS) for Misamis Occidental last January 24-27, 2022. The main objective of this module was to train the participants on how to develop their own database using SQLite and QGIS in REDAS.

A total of 32 participants joined the training: 29 from the Misamis Occidental Province and LGUs – Provincial Government of Misamis Occidental (8), Aloran (2), Baliangao (1), Bonifacio (1), Calamba (1), Clarin (1), Concepcion (2), Don Victoriano (2), Jimenez (1), Lopez Jaena (1), Oroquieta (2), Panaon (1), Plaridel (2), Sapang Dalaga (1), Sinacaban (1), Tangub (1), Tudela (1); and two guest participants from Mariano Marcos State University (2). One participant from SOEPD-PHIVOLCS (1) also took part in the said event.

A pre-training orientation on January 24 was conducted where verification of the REDAS, SQLite and Quantum GIS software were conducted to make sure these previously-installed software in Module 1 are still working properly.

During the training proper, the topics covered included “Familiarization on SQLite Module”, “Developing SQLite Database”, “Putting Spatial Component to SQLite”, “Plotting Data in REDAS from SQLite Tables (Basemaps and Admin Boundaries)”, “Plotting Multi-Hazard Maps”, “Advanced SQLite Scripting” and “Linking and Plotting of REDAS SQLite Database to QGIS and Google Earth”.

Other ilectures such as “Understanding Geologic Hazards (Rain-Induced Landslide and Flood)” by Julius Vincent Umali (from MGB) and “Volcanoes and Volcanic Hazards” by Ma. Antonia V. Bornas (from VMEPD-PHIVOLCS) were also discussed.

To test understanding of the participants of the concepts and skills, they were required to submit their outputs through a REDAS Module 2 Seatwork which was focused on identifying open spaces or areas of temporary refuge in a given locality.  In this exercise, they were asked to identify these areas and develop relational database using REDAS.  The figures below show the outputs of the exercise:

Based on the evaluation form responses, most of them appreciated the lectures and hands-on activities. One of the responses  was: “I learned more about the geologic hazards that are present in our country. I also learned the other features/operability of REDAS-SQLITE. Although it is very challenging since 'twas my first time,  I gained a little knowledge on how to use the QGIS.”

The training was headed by DOST Undersecretary and PHIVOLCS Officer-in-Charge Dr. Renato U. Solidum, Jr., REDAS Program Coordinator and Associate Scientist Dr. Maria Leonila P. Bautista, and REDAS Course Advisers Dr. Bartolome C. Bautista, Ishmael C. Narag, and Engr. Angelito G. Lanuza.  The speakers and facilitators were Ma. Antonia V. Bornas, Florenette B. Garcia, Ian P. Javier, John Deladia, For. Jordana Marie L. Argamosa, Engr. Noel C. Rosario Jr., Sarena P. Tarongoy, Engr. Hannah Joy D. Torio, and Engr. Jose Vincent E. Cruz. Mr. Julius Vincent P. Umali from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) was also invited as guest speaker for the training.
